The Faders, essentially a core duo of Scott Kesner (words, bass, keyboards) and Mike Suby (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards) began in late 1996 as Porky. The "Porky" name celebrated Kesners sausage eating atrocities while gently hinting at the XL size of their mesamorphic drummer, Will Brady. Kesner and Suby quickly composed nine songs within a month and entered Cold Room Studios with engineer Daron Burke. Will Brady was promptly fired after committing his drum tracks to tape.

Like all great rock n roll records recorded in under a month, "Porkys Greatest Hits," sounds badly bungled, yet refreshing. The weird little songs on this debut accurately depict Porky as a bunch of tutored buffoons lampooning their inner worlds. The titles "Free-on-Freon," and "Rosemary Lucass Daughter Trashed My Car," best convey a sense of what this record is all about without having to explain it to you. The band quickly changed their name to Fizz after horrifying too many with their Porky moniker.

The "Fizz," name reflected the fleeting nature of the tunes while implicating the early 80s as an obvious inspiration. Though Kesner and Suby never planned to perform any of these tunes live, the two quickly recanted and assembled a live band. Geoff Robbins, a seasoned veteran of the Albany/Clifton Park scene joined on drums and Doug Silverstein quickly filled the rhythm guitar vacancy. Fizz employed anyone with a pair of hands to play keyboards. This proved an uncomfortable and unresolvable saga for the next two years.
